Well, as Easter approaches, we are reminded of man's love for his fellow
man and about the importance of sacrifice and helping and loving
others. Which got me to thinking about charity...
Anyone on Facebook at any given time is bombarded with invites for
causes--Save The Whales, Save the Fish, Help The Children Make a
Wish--And heartfelt statements by friends about charity work they're
involved in and its importance. They do marathons, walkathons, telethons
and such. They go overseas and live among the suffering and lend a
helping hand. They fundraise, go door to door, sell cookies etc...I
sincerely applaud them all for their efforts.
But what about those of us not so inclined to the public eye? Or simply
perhaps not so inclined? That would be me at the moment. Having been
through living hell with a very sick daughter who is finally getting
better, I prefer a timeout from the trenches... to savor and enjoy all
life has to offer without the mention of anything related to cancer or
autoimmune disease, as does she.
Well, I would like to remind everyone, that there are many ways in which
you can help your fellow man. And sadly, many ways that go
unrecognized...Clothing donation to local charities, sponsoring a child
overseas, delivering a meal to neighbors in need, mowing the lawn for an
elderly neighbor, offering to do their food shopping, cleaning,
etc...Teaching a child to read, babysitting kids so their parents can go
to the hospital to attend to a sick family member. Or simply calling a
friend in need to remind them that they matter.
Then there are those who take care of chronically ill family members.
They give of their time. Something of which has no price tag. And they
do so quietly, asking for nothing in return but that their loved one
would get well. Or that they could make them comfortable until they pass
on...
Each of us can contribute in his or her own special way. There are no
guidelines or list of requirements except those that are written in your
heart. And no random act of kindness ever goes unheeded, however
quietly it is delivered. A smile or kind gesture could be the highlight
of someone's day. And simple words such as "Thank you"..."I believe in
you"..."I know you can do this" can be so powerful as to completely
change someone's life.
The point is to follow your heart and lend a hand where and when you
can. Valor unseen is still valiant. And we can ALL make a difference.
Kudos to the heroes... public, or unseen and unsung...
May all of life's blessings be yours in abundance...
